Film
Before Sunset (2004)
Director: Richard Linklater
Recommended by: Drunken Superman
Has Fentablar seen this before?: No.
Well, Linklater has done it again. He has provided another piece of film which in my opinion has literally nothing to offer society. I simply do not understand how 80 minutes of a man and woman walking around talking to each other can be considered good cinema. The very ending of the film is really the only thing I could see that was appreciable, but even then it was too late for I still had no connection to either Jesse (Ethan Hawke) or Celine (Julie Delpy).
The general concept of the story is not necessarily a bad one but due to what seems like a lack of creativity, it is carried out poorly. The knowledge that even more people worked on this script than worked on Before Sunrise is somewhat laughable to me, because they're pretty much the same exact film - and neither one of them is even the least bit interesting to me.
Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
Plot Effectiveness: 2/5. There weren't any holes in the plot, so that's a good thing - but that's all the plot had going for it.
Cinematography/Shot Selection: 3/5. We're walking, we're walking, we're walking - ok now, from the back - we're walking, we're walking - from the front again - we're walking, we're stopping. Linklater = still a "hack" in my book.
Overall Acting: 3/5. Bland. The scary thing is, there were a few scenes in which Ethan Hawke both looked and acted like some sort of meth-ridden Tom Cruise knock-off.
Score/Soundtrack: 2/5. Very bland.
OVERALL RATING: 2.5/5
